Mt. Salem Church
To Be Re-opened
Memories of days long past mingled with the shadows cast by the lamplight Sunday evening as fifty folk gathered to pledge their interest in the re-opening of Mt. Salem Baptist Church at Rock Mills.
The closed doors of the church shut within themselves not only* the history of a mother church but’ also the history of a Rappahannock Landmark.
In the spring of 1824, a small
the hill above the present location of Mount Salem, and constituted the church. A building was constructed around the school house. (Later on, the school house was torn down and moved out).
The present Mount Salem was built during the 1850’s on land given by Henry Miller, great grandfather of D. D. Miller of
of Culpeper.
William F. Broadus served as first pastor for the newly baptized church. His years of pastorship added to those of the next three pastors, Cumberland George, Barnett Grimsley and S. M. Athey accounted for 84 years of growth in “wisdom and statue” by Mount Salem.
From the farthest reaches of Rappahannock County, Christians ' traveled many miles to Mount ’•’Salem, bringing thefr children there to be baptized, and in turn watching their children hand their sons and daughters into safekeep
