Council Approves
Speed Increase To
35 Miles Per Hour
The Washington Town Council in their July meeting held Tues' day night, July 13, approved a resolution to. increase the speed limit in the town of Washington from one of 25 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour by *a vote of 4-2.
"The resolution was made by Mrs. C. J. Miller and seconded by Mrs. J. W. Price, in response to a request made by P. D. Coldfrom Resident Engineer of the Highway Department. Mr. Colditon appeared before the Council and stated that 2 tests had been made"in 'Washington--and the results showed that 86% of the motorists go through town at an average of 36 miles per hour. Adding that the speed limits in a number of towns had been increased, he called for a resolution to raise
per hour.
Four members of the council, including Mayor Davis, Council- 1 ladies Miller, Price, Hawkins and^ Benton approved the resolution. Critzer and Jenkins cast the dissenting votes. -—
Following some discussion of the water works issue, , it was agreed to table the discussion until the August meeting. However, plans were made to have a public meeting at some designated date and at this meeting, ask qualified persons, familiar with the issue, to present the problems to the people. Then the citizens would air their opinions and a decision would be reached based on these views at —lhe-Jiext rnnnril meeting. __ -Mr. Coldiron told the ladies that within the next week several streets in town would be resurfaced.
The 26th of July was set for a meeting to discuss the town budget. Requests for graats and increases or decreases . in the present expenditures will be approved at the August meeting of the council; and the final draft of the budget made.
