ALTERNATIVE IS OFFERED TO AVOID APPEASEMENT . Recent developments have given new significance to the Statement of Secretary Dulles several months ago that we may have *to reappraise our foreign policy.
News dispatches have indicated that the french have to all intents and purposes given up the fight in Indo-china. Whether or not they can salvage anything at the conference table remains to be seen but Communists seldom make concessions except to superior force. That means the more than two billion dollars we have spent helping the French in that war has gone down the drain. Recent conferences among our\ Asian allies concerning a new line of defense against Communism extending from Japan through the Philippines to Australia have produced no tangible results, as is indicated by the statement of the Premier of New Zealand advocating admission of Red China to the United Nations. Public statements issued after the conference" between Sir Winston Churchill and President Eisenhower threw little light on the tenor of their private conversations and did little to off set the speech of Foreign Minister Eden in the Hpuse of Commons before coming to Washington in which he too advocated recognition of Red China and in effect a program of appeasement. The British people love their freedom and can be counted on to give a good account of themselves in battle but it seems evident they have reached the conclusion that they, have no adequate defense against destruction if there is another world war and they are un- ‘ willing to take a stand which they feel risks touching off such a conflict.
