are planning a week end vacation, July 9, 10, and 11, attending several parties and visiting friends and relatives in Baltimore, Maryland. Mrs. Ray Nelson and children of Washington, D. C. will stay with Mrs. E. M. Stuart at the—Stuart home—during their_ absence. '
Captain L. B. Stuart, U.S.N. (Rtd), a newcomer and resident of Amissville for less than a year, was given a surprise birthday party last Sunday evening, July 4, by a large group of friends and neighbors.
Those responsible and attending were Mr. and Mrs. John Tapp and children, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pearman and son and nephew, Mrs. Charles Green and granddaughter, Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Green, Miss Peggy Ann Green, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Barron and daughter, Mrs. J. L. Walter and granddaughter, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Smith and children, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Jenkins and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tear.
The party was a complete surprise and a grand success with games, many fireworks and refreshments. It was discovered during the evening that the birthday of Mrs. Claude Smith was also July 4. She assisted Captain Stuart in cutting the birthday cake and received good wishes from all present. .

Jimmy Yates, son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Yates of Slate Mills, was taken to the hospital Monday night for an apendectomy.
