Loafers in the poultry flock won’t pay their way—get rid of than.
That’s the advice from Harry L, Moore, head of the VPI poultry department. ,1
He says recent reports indicate that by October 1 laying flocks will be 6 to 8 per cent smaller than a year earlier. With better .egg prices likely, this is a good, time to have the laying house full of good layers. If you don’t have enough pullets to fill the house, Moore suggests keeping some of die best layers from uie present flock.
The best hens to keep over are the last ones to stop' laying. The hens that stop laying first are the . poorest layers. If you watch the flock closely, it is easy to tell' when a hen stops laying. By culling as they go out of production you don't only save feed, but usually receive a better price per pound than you will later.
If you have enough good pullets to fill the laying houses you will be better off by selling the old .birds.
