• The action by the British gqvemment early last week in raising from 15 to 33-1/3 per cent the required down payment on purchases of automobiles and household appliances, has brought comment from readers on the exceedingly easy terms now said u> be -available in this country.
We are told that some dealers announce over the radio that they will sell cars with nothing down -and no payment until after Labor Day, and are throwing in a premium or two or some cash as a bonus.
Obviously there is something here that doesn’t meet the ear. No grocer will give a ham to just anyone who comes in and says “charge it” No- clothier can afford to let any tom, Dick or Harry have a suit in return for a promise to bring in something every week until it is paid for. And certainly no car dealer can let every listener to his radio plug have an automobile now and make final payments on it in 1958.
