For the simple reason that a great many people in Rappahannock County have for years regarded Miss Della as an ageless, timeless and unchanging institution, her birthday^ excite little interest in many quarters. If there is such a creation as a living, breathing, entirely human! institution blessed with the divine ability to arouse in first grade schjool children the desire to learn, and to instill into them the orderly, welldisciplined habits of learning, the fundamental traits of good behavior, of politeness, courtesy, respect for authority and theif elders, of truth and fair play, then Miss Della is such an institution. Generations of children have leajmed to read, to write and to figurt,under the care of this watchful* patient,

How many times, increasingly1 in the last few years, have fathers and mothers been heard to say, with much more feeling than they show about other things in life, "I hope Miss Della will teach long enough to start my children in school/’ It is difficult indeed, to imagine a higher tribute.” ,
It was SO years ago that Miss Della’s desk began to accumulate’ apples and flowers. After several years of private tutoring^ she taught at her first school, The Ramey School near the 'top of the mountain. The daily trips from her home in Sperryville to the small school were made by horse and buggy. After 3 years here, Miss Della taught at die Atkins Town , School at the foot of the mountain.
