oociai OCCUHI.J v/uiw,.

Parsons stated that many survivors of deceased workers who died prior to September 1950 were told that they could not receive payments because the worker had not worked long enough under the law in effect at the time of his death to be insured. However, the 1954 Amendments to the SocialSecurity Act made it possibile to pay benefits to an estimated 200,000 of these survivors.

Parsons explained that the social security law provides that no claim for monthly benefits can be retroactive for more than 12 months before the month "of filing. Since this new provision of the law became effective in September 1954, any claim for survivors benefits will have to be made on or before September 30, 1955 in order ta receive full benefits. Assistance in filing a formal application may be obtained from the social security representative who visits Washington, Va., the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Court House.
