Council lady Miss Ruby Jenkins asked Mr. Brown if the'$3000 (surplus) on interest at the bank could be used if a shortage would arise, or was this sum earmarked. Mr. Brown explained that the $3000 could be used like any other revenue that comes to the town each year. To his knowledge it had not been earmarked. (If so, a record would have been made in his office, and it Would be carried on the books under the earmarked title instead of under general expenses.
The council then reviewed the tentative budget, to cut out nonessential items. Several to be cut included: ^"purchase of a berJlanent Christmas tree—a ‘temporary one will be bought as in. other years; printing of colored post cards; printing of more town leaflets—700 now on hand; purchase of an oil heater for the town hall; painting of street signs; aad convention expenses. The other items were left “as is,” although there was discussion on how the* could be cut down too.
Although cutting but these items left a small amount in miscellaneous, it was felt that' the amount might be too little, should an emergency arise. Therefore, $200 was voted to be taken from the surplus $3000 and put under V “miscellaneous.”
