The Joint Committee dn the Economic Report is a bipartisan committee of Congress which keeps a check on the pulse of the national economy. It is headed at this time by Senator Paul H. Douglas (D) of Illinois.
Last week, the staff of this committee prepared a commentary on the current economic situation. The staff report attracted considerable attention in the press, because it predicted a surplus in the Federal budget of approximately $2,000, 000,000 by the end of the 1956 fiscal year, June 30.
Such a surplus would be alnfost 10 times the excess of income over outgo which President Eisenhower -said, in his January budget message, might be achieved in this fiscal year.
