While there is substantial sentiment, in and out of Congress, for/ doing something about the problem of the postal deficit, there is little sentiment, in my opinion, outside of Postmaster General Summerfield’s immediate circle, for raising the 3-cent letter to 4 cents, when first-class mail has been showing a profit on the Post Office Department’s books. The bulk of Mr. Summerfield’s new fevenue would come from this increase, and the subsidy for “junk” mail would receive much gentler treatment.
In addition, President Eisenhower recently asked Congress for $547,000,000 more than requested in his January budget for defense needs, particularly in the Air Force.
