The puzzling thing about this preoccupation with price supports on the basic crops is that less than one out of every four dollars of farm income in the United States comes from the five basics involved in current legislation—wheat, cotton, corn, rice and peanuts.
(Tobacco, not up for major changes in this year’s legislation, is supported on a plan more favorabe to taxpayers generally than those of other basics, but there is a question as to whether the effect these supports have had on some of the markets of our tobacco growers may be a boomerang factor.
