Dr. Barbara Lee Diamondstein of the Education Department of University of Virginia, delivered the keynote address at the Thursday morning general session. In her speech Dr. Diamonstien emphasized, among other factors, the importance of the oersonality of . the teacher, the teacher’s confidence in the child and respect tor him, confidence and trust between teacher and pupil to give the pupil a sense of security, and the necessity of home visitation. Concluding, she admonished the teachers to be ever aware of the fact that they are teaching children, not books.
Following tht general session, the teachers met in discussion groups according to gradelevels to deliberate upon the implications of this information presented by the speaker. For these meetings Dr. Diamonstein; Supt. Hounshall; Q D. Gasque, Supt. of Rappahannock County Schools; Mr. Yowell, Supervisor, Madison County Schools; and Mrs. Leslie Fox Keyser, Supervisor of Rappahannock County Schools served as consultants.

Present at the Friday morning general session to offer comments on the conference theme and serve as consultants for the day were Mrs. Alpha Smith, Visiting Teacher of Madison,County Schools; C. J. M. Kyle, Superintendent of Orange County Schools; Dr. Rupert Picott, Executive secretary of the Virginia Teachers’ Association; and Mrs. Leslie Fox Keystr.
