The Crutches have been thrown away, the borrowed cane has been returned, but, now, Mrs. Bessie Berry Colvin, a 62 year old grandmother, resident of Orange, and friend of many, residents In Rappahannock county, can call herself an artist.
It all started on her 60th birthday when she slipped and broke* her hip, Empty hours, for the first time in her busy life, weighted her crutch-lbound existence, and she indulged herself in an old desire - she began to paint.
Prior to her accident, she had never seen an oil painting and has the greatest desire to visit the National Art Gallery in Washington, and is yet to see a pro fessional artinst at work. This old desire has thus far lead to the completion of 30 landscapes. Many of her pictures are painted, with significant changes from photographic landscapes which she cjit from magazines or calendars. Recently, she has been trying her hand from real life, catching the countryside in its various moods. !
