Opened For Tour
The Annual House Tour and Dried Arrangement Sale sponsored |by die Ladies Auxiliary of Bromfield Parish will be held this weekend, October 17 and 18 from 1 to 5 pjn. Block tickets of $1.50 may be purchased at any of the three homes opened for the tour or from Mrs. C. J. Miller, Washington, Va. until October 16. Dried arrangements which will be on display in the homes and additional arrangements will be sold.
The Horseshoe House, home of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Janney, lo cated on Fodderstack Road, three miles north of Flint Hill, contains original hand blown and rolled glass windows, pine floors and old English bricks, as well as a hand caned mantle and antique side board, an heirloom of the Deatherage family. George Calvert built the original stone house and adjacent buildings in 1750. The Oden (House in the town of Washington, Va., now owned by Miss Annie Miller Almond, was . a one and a half-story log structure built in the 1700’s, to which was added a hall, parlor and three upstairs bedrooms in the 19th century. Of particular interest here are the original mantle and wallpaper border and an old Pennsyl- s vania water stand, a Waterford overlay lamp with milkglass bottom and mahogany drop-leaf table from England. .■'■■■‘■•-v-* *
The Shade, the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Raymond Wire four and one-half miles south of Washington, Va., is an impressive three story house built in 1780 by James . Green on property that was part j of a land grant from the King of England to Frank Thornton. Union troops billeted here during the War Between the States. Interesting lithographs of Civil War engagements are found throughout the hou^e. Boxwoods of the original terrace-type garden still remain.
