potato field. These Same landowners never consider the valuable woodland, which needs to be weeded of its low grade and non-merchantable trees, in order to produce a more profitable crop in a shorter period of time.

A com or potato field, once stripped of its crop, is usually replanted with a cover crop to protect arid rebuild the soil and perhaps to produce an in-between crop. The same practice should be carried out on a woodland that is stripped of all merchantable timber. Left to nature, it would be at lost 80 to 100 years before another crop could be harvested from the area and this crop will probably be far less valuable than the first.

&o landowner would allow livestock to browse or trample his corn or potato field but he doesn’t hesitate to turn cattle into his woodland. Although the damage in a woodland area may not be as drastically apparent as it would be in a com field, the &mage is just as bad. Cattle compact the soil,
