The wide right-of-way; the overpasses and cloverleaves; superthick paving the necessity to build a special “service’’ road to permit their remaining aolcs because the superhighway does not permit of intersecting country lanes all of these give us an awareness of the tremendous costs of modern highstandard highway building. Seeing even such a short stretch of the National Interstate System in being, our satisfaction is tempered by the knowledge that this convenience is costing am average of more than $1 million a mile.ranging up to $4 million a mile for big city throughways.
Seeing in Rockingham the national program in miniature, we note in the newspaper that county residents will pay more than $200, OOO^dditional for gasoline because of the “temporary” 1-cent federal tax increase. Of course, this 200, 000 is only the extra bill, as Rockingham will contribute a much y larger total share to the Interstate j. Highway Program through other established taxes on gasoline, tires, trucks and diesel fuel.
Despite the large sums they are^ paying in taxes earmarked for roads,. Rockingham citizens read in their newspaper several months ago that they could expect no allotments in this fiscal year for new work on their farm-to-market roads.
