county depends largely on the ability of our land to supply food and fiber to so necessary to our daily living. Conservation then becomes important not only to the 12 per cent of our. population engaged in the business of fanning but to the 88 percent engaged in other pursuits as well.
Based on present trends it is expected that our national population will increase by oversixtjy million persons during the next sixteen years. To meet the needs of such a population, increase it is essential that the fertility of 'Our lands be conserved or improved, and that increasing emphasis be placed on the use of land according to its capacity.
We are told that a population increase of sixty million would create a need for, among other things, almost double our present water s u p pi y and conservation practices on 1,159,000,000 [acres of agricultural land. Recognizing the importance of conserving our basic natural resources Congress authorized the granting of Soil and Water Conservation loans by the Fanners Home Administration. These loans are available to farmers who are able, to provide, ora their own account or through satisfactory credit from private sources, die initial cost of performing conseivadonn practices. These loans may be scheduled over periods sufficient in langth to enable the farmer to repay the loan as he reaps the benefits of tfce improvements made.
