Hogs in Richmond last week brought prices above Virginia auctions.
It is worth noting that slaughter heifers at the special sale brought only $1.50 a hundred less than steers.
If you decide on the sales, remember that cattle are being sold on an out-weight basis this year.
Good grade. slaughter steers w'ere bringing $22.50 to $24.75 on Virginia auctions last week. Good and Low Choice cattle in Chicago ""were bringing $23 to $25.75, with a top of $28. Cattle in the Virginia special sale last Thursday topped at $25.60, with Choice grade going at $25 to $25.60 and Good Grade at $24 to $24.50.
HOGS
Don’t look for any permanent strength in hog prices for the next three weeks or so. Prices probably will fluctuate a little around present levels.
You might watch the weather picture in the west. A few days to a week after a blizzard, prices usually take a temporary j)ump when farmers, can’t get to market in the heavy hog-producing areas.
Look for the usual late January price jump to flatten out this year. More hogs will be coming to market than last year.
The nine big hog stages say they have aboift five per cent more hogs of all ages now, and they will be coming to market until about June.
But the industry has shown in the past it can adjust to a heavy supply picture pretty quickly. Prices look as if they may rise above last year by July or so and stay above, provided the spring pig crop isn’t another big one.
