rick’s Day had come and gone and that they hadn’t planted their potatoes. They consoled themselves, however, with the fact that the heavy blanket of snow which has covered their gardens for many weeks has done a lot of good in many ways. Clyde did something for “cress” that Jenkins is posititve that the snow nothing else could do-—and that he was determined to cut every bunch he . could before he plowed.
Billy Moffett was digging the last of the salsify and promising his mother to get busy cleaning off the asparagus bed. A peep over the fence of the Massie garden revealed the fact that the potato onions that have been in the family for five generatitons wei" making a wonderful showing. “Grandmotthcr- Holland gave Daddy the 'start' right after he was married in 18W, Mrs. W. H. Massie, Jr. said with pride.
The question of when the ground was exactly ri,rht for plowing was much discussed byall the "garden minded”. Most of them agreed that it would be better in a few days . . . that it was a little wet. But Humpie Smoot with his tractor was busy getting his- mother s potato ground ready. “Mother always decides when she wants her garden plowed", he said, "and she always has good luck”.
Mr. Willis Burke, who is acknowledged as something of an authority on gardening, hasn't put any seed in the ground yet, but hopes to do so the first of the week. Every year he tries to raise “something new”, but hasn’t decided just what he w'ill experiment with in 1960.
Marshall Barber, his horses and plow are missing now' from the garden scene, much to the regret of many. For a number of years Marshall totok great pride in plowing the gardens of those who contend that "tractor plowing' 'is not good for the small garden. “I always try and leave
