The morning after Caryl Chessman was executed, we listened with amazement to the maudlin lament of a bespectacled television entertainer. Each of us, \tfe heard him moan, is diminished by the death of this man. To permit Caryl'Chessman twelve years of suspense and waiting was, according to him, cruel and unusual punishment. Then he sawed off the final violin cry of, what will the rest of the world think?
Whether or not a person believes in capital punishment is a matter of personal opinion, and we do not propose to delve into that question any more than to say we feel it is regretable but necessary.
As far as Chessman is concerned, he was a Jjabitual criminal sentenced to die for two heinous crimes against nature. That he was kept in cruel suspense for 12 years was not the fault of the State. The State cannot appeal a criminal case, only the Defendant can. In this instance, that Defendant was Chessman. It was he, himself, who utilized every technicality provided by the State to protect a defendant, and thereby stretched his own period of suspense to twelve years.
But of all the arguments that raise our ire, that of ‘ what will the world think” disgusts us most. What other nation has contributed so much to the economic stability and military security of the free world as the United States. Ann what nation has askd so little in return for its contribution Yet it seems to be an integral part of our continuing imma tucity that whenever an unforutnate event occurs in th ■ountry, be it in race relations, criminal procedure, or what have you, and though it be no business whatsoever ot the rest of the world, some jack-a-napes with a win raise the cry of ‘‘What will the rest of the woild think. It appears to us'that the rest of the world can less aliord an Honest critical appraisement than the United btates.
