Heavy traffic and inclement weather were two contributing factors in the five accidents reported on Rappahannock County’s highways during the long Memorial Day weekend.
Friday, May 27 at 11 pjn. on Route 231 south of Sperryville, a 1953 .Chevrolet sedan driven by Hurlbert Nelson Weaver and owned by John Barber of Madison ran off the right side of the road, turned over and lodged against a fence. John Barber was taken to Culpeper Memorial (Hospital by Washington Rescue Squad where he was treated and released. Approximately $200 damage was done to the car.
Saturday, May 28, two wrecks occurred. At 4:30 in the afternoon on Route 522, east of Sperryville, a 1952 Ford convertible driven by Harry Rudolph Si mpson and owned by Carlyle Simpson was traveling too fast for the condition of the road when it skidded and hit the left side of a bridge, then skidded into the right side of the bridge. No injuries were received \ by the occupants, but the automobile was a total loss. $100 damage was done to the bridge.
