May as well look for some slight weakening in turkey prices in the next few weeks.
Since Easter, turkey prices firmed up and held their own until a few days ago. Hatch figures for the heavies back in December for those coming to market in May were up by 21 per cent over the previous year. Rut May slaughter was up only three per cent. So.it looks like some of these birds were marketed earlier as fryers.
For the light breeds, the January hatch was only 35 per cent of a year earlier and May slaughter is running about the same. So, it looks as though a lot of growers are pushing heavy whites to market at light weights to take advantage of the price situation. iln Virginia last week the small type turkey was bringing 25 to 26 cents.
