During the past fiscal year, the main fund paid out a little more than $9 billion in benefits and spent $206 million in administrat on. Its expenditures were about $1.2 billion more than its receipts.
In the same pe..od, the disability trust fund paid out $339 million in benefits, spent $21 million in administration and took in $=>6S million more than it paid out.
This would seem to indicate that the main fund is in a bad way, whereas the disability fund is doing well. It must be kept in mind, however, that the “educated guesses" of those highly-specialized statisticians..the actuaries..show howhuge balances can be extinguished over the long term by an expected heavier outflow of benefit payments if tax inc eases are r t provided, and how current deficits can be wiped out by expected higher income or reduced expenditures in the years ahead.
