2. The School Construction Bill which in one form, carries authorization for federal grants to the States to assist in building public schools. President Eisenhower favors some aid of this kind, but the idea is opposed by many, who see serious dangers in any extension oj federal influence in public school systems. On the other hand, there are those who support a broader bill with additional grants for raising teachers’ salaries.
3. The Housing Bill which, in addition to certain extensions of existing federal home loaiy/guaranty provisions, includes/han expanded program of so-called public housing the subsidized construction and operation of lowrent developments in the cities.
4. The Minimum Wage Bill, originally the Kcnnedy-M o r s eRoosevelt measure, calling for an immediate increase from the present $1 and hour to $1.25 an hour in the federal minimum wage and extension of the wage and overtime provisions of federal law to an estimated 7.8 million workers. The Senate Labor Committee recommended reducing new coverage to an estimated 5 million workers, and making the wage increase effective in a series of steps. The House Labor Committee further reduced the new coverage to approximately 3.5 million workers. (The Eisenhower Administration has recommended extending coverage to 3.1 million workers not now under the law.)
