Chester Gap, once referred to as a sleey little community, sitting high atop a mountain peak in the Blue Ridge, between Warren and Rappahannock Counties, no longer fits the description.
Since the opening of the post office there in I954 in the country store owned and operated by M. A. Greeley, the village has increased in population and rapidly spread over the mountain top.
The community has organized a fire company and a cinderblock building for equipment, now stored in someone’s barn, is under construction. To date all work on the 52 by 62 foot structure has been done by volunteers. Efforts are being intensified to get the building under roof before cold weather, so that work on the inside can continue.
Chester Gap also boasts several subdivisions and city folk seem to be clamoring for homesites. Right up to the line of the Shenandoah National Park, row after row of lots are marked with SOLD signs; Some lots have a mail box, notthing else; some a driveway; others a tent, a trailer. Still others have cottages or year-around homes alteady erected.
Hopes are to build a Baptist Chi - ch with assistance from the Shiloh Baptist Association until it can become self-sustaining. At present Sunday School is held in a little mission there.
