At graded feeder pig sales so far, pigs have been bringing $3.75 to $4 above regular market prices. Biggest demand has been for 60 to 00 pountf pigs but it will probably pay to unload lighter pigs quickly.

For the longer pull, hog producers across the country are starting the build-up side of the production cycle the shortest on record. Hog numbers were up in 1959, down in 1960 and will be up again in 1961.

The I960 spring pig crop was down 16 per cent from a year earlier but the fall crop, according to fanners intentions will be down only three per cent.

In the ten corn belt states on September 1 intentions to farrow were reported three per cent above last year for September.November farrowings and four per cent above for December February farrowings.

So by mid-summer of 1961, added hog numbers will begin depressing prices again.

In Richmond last week hogs were bringing $17.50 to $18, with Southeast Virginia at $17.25 to $18. Western markets averaged $17.25 to $18 Baltimore, $18 to SI8.25 and Virginia Auctions averaged $17.25 for top hogs.

Broiler prices will probably be on the weak side for the next week or two with supplies about five per cent above last year and prices this week the same as a year ago.
