a vet check all cows for pregnancy and market those not in calf as well as those which will drop late summer calves. If he doesn’t feel he can do this then sell the cows his observations tell him are not bred or will not calve until late. The latter should get rid of most of the cows holding down that $100 gross per cow average.
Along with all of these known herd management tools we have had for years the calf producer who is really trying to improve his lot will enroll his herd in Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Program. Get Records made available through BCIA, and then use them as the basis of culling and selection. Ask Ned Johnson, Larry Manwaring, Lucio Kilby and Piedmont Farm about what BCIA records have meant to them!
Contrary to what some say the BCIA program emphasizes quality as much as it does rate of gain, which is as it should be_....you sell type and pounds..without either you are in trouble. The trained eye can see type, but the eye is not accurate in measuring growth rate. BCIA records of performance give the cowman an economical balance of these two selling items (type and pounds) by an individual cow (or bull) score called an index. Having indexes on the bull and cows is of no value unless the breeder uses them as culling and selection tools.
