The Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company began distribution of the 1960-61 telephone directory this week it was announced by Harry C. Cole. local Manager at Front Royal. This year’s directory, largest in the history of Front Royal, lists 3527 subscribers in the alphabetical sectios for Front Royal, and Washington, Va. and has in addition the alphabetical listing for Sperryville, Va. During the 195960 directory period approximately 1,152 changes occured. One out of every six residential subscribers now have an extension telephone. Mr. Cole reported, and there are now 4,412 telephones in use in the area. In 1940 there were only 1303 telephones in Front Royal or an increase of 3,109 during the 20year period.
The most popular name in the directory was Williams again this year with 55 listings. Second was Smith with 41 listings and third Henry with 32 listings. A & H Loan Company was again the first name in the directory, the 7th year it has' claimed that position. Last name was Zwink. also a veteran in that position.
The Front Royal directory serves a population area of approximately 13,500 at last estimate with approximately 4,000 families whose effective buying income has been estimated by L. M. Berry Co., publishers of the directory, at $21,116,000. Total retail sales computed by the publisher was $14,591,000.
Mr. Cole estimated that distribution of the directory should be completed by October 22nd and has requested subscribers to destroy their old directory as soon as the new one is received to avoid reaching numbers that have been removed or changed. Subscribers are also asked to pay particular attention to thel instructions in the front of the book to avoid difficulty when placing calls.
