Religious Fanaticism Deplored By Jefferson
On November 2, 1882 from bis home at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson wrote his friend, Dr. Cooper* who was head of a Seminary concerning “toleration and freedom of religion”
Today people all over the Nation, and especially Virginians have a profound respect and affection for Jefferson and quote him on practically all subjects. They are discussing his views on the evils resulting from the “concentration of power” and ‘freedom of religion.”
Mr. Jefferson left no doubt in the minds of the people on how he felt on all subjects. In his letter to Dr. Cooper he was much concerned about Richmond and said, “In OUR Richmond there is much fanaticism.but chiefly among the women. They have their night meetings and praying parties, attended by ministers , .and sometimes by a henpecked husband. In our village of Charlottesville there is a good degree of religion, with a.small spice only of fanaticism.” „
Mr. Jefferson then wrote Dr. Cooper concerning religious instruction at the University. He said, “By bringing all of the sects together and mixing them ^with the mass of other students, we shall soften their asperities, liberalize and neutral their prejudices and make the GENERAL RELIGION, a religion of PEACE... REASON... and MORALITY.”
Mr- Jefferson Concluded with HOPE. “The diffusion of instruction, to which there is now so growing attention, will be the remote remedy to this fever of fanaticism.”
