Senator Harry Goldvvater of Arizona, spokesman for political and economic conservatives in this Country, has said that “The ivory tower visionaries who produce blue prints for the superstate refuse to take into account the differences between men. If government is to be truly a servant of the people and not their master then we must never permit ourselves to presume that because something is good for one man it is good for all men.”
Subtly perhaps, Mr. Goldwater is warning us about a trend that has already progressed to the danger point in this once free country. Hig government must have big blue prints, big payrolls, big plans, big goals and incidentally big taxes and big money to finance it all. Hig government thrives on averages ; in fact the average man is about all it can cope with. Thus there is no room for individuality, and everyone must be bent to fit the pattern. You see this pattern at some stage of development in practically every phase of American life.
“Make it compulsory,” is the cry of the ivory tower visionaries, as Mr. Gildwater so aptly calls them. Make everyone join and conform, or it ftvon’t work! Make everyone join a union and pay dues, if he wants-to work! Make everyone join and pay for social security ! Force us ail into a socialized medicine scheme! Compel farmers to restrict acreages of certain crops! Crack dovy hard on those who fail to comply!
This, then, is the pattern. This is the web which is entangling us all. This is what the visionaries and planners have in store for us. They’ll decide what’s good for us and they’ll tell us when, where and how. The majority rules! Conform or get out I
