land is more than soil; that soil is more than a seed bed. We know now that sun, air, rain, soil, plants animals and man are all linked together in chain of interdependence. The elemental forms of matter move through this sequence in an endless cycle; the energy of life flows through its diverse paths. We know that land is all these things and without any of its partSL—save probably man alone:— the machinery of life on this earth would come to a stop.
This is the environmental system of which man is a part and within which he must live. He does not have to accept nature exactly as he finds it, of course. The movement of matter and the flow of energy can be safely directed to better serve his ends. He can concentrate organic materials and minerals in certain places to improve the natural soil many times over. He can choose certain plants to be used as crops and multiply their harvest. He can selectively favor certain animals and suppress others. But he must do all these things with a constant awareness of the relationship between all the parts of the system that comprises land.
On each farm, or watershed, there are alternative uses of soil, assuming proper combinations of treatments.' In the same manner, there are alternative uses for land resources in the total picture.
