Resources Week
The week of October 16-22, 1960 has been designated as Virginia Natural Resources Conservation Week.
Land means many things to many people. For the first 100 years of American History-, our economic development was based largely upon exploitation of our soil, water, timber and wildlife resources. Today, however, land begins to rake on totally new values as watershed area, as recreational space, as wilderness or natural areas for investigation and inspiration, as transportation lanes for rapid surface travel, as a place for air travelers to arrive and depart, as living, working, playing, producing space for pyramiding millions of people.
As civilization emerged, man gained new tools and techniques for subduing the plants and animals of this environment. Early civilized man used his new powers to interpose himself in and upon this system without sufficient knowledge of it. As a result, he often damaged the land.—left waste areas in his path. He began then to learn something about the land, however, slowly. We are still learning today. But we are still a long way from soh ing all the problems that arise from man’s use of these land resources.
