Samuel Barron, who as Flag Officer of the Confederate Steam Ship Rappahannock, was to encounter many difficulties while his ship was detained by the French Government in the harbor of Calais, gave up a coin mission m the Union Navy to serve the Confederacy.
On May 14, 1861 he received the following letter from Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy in Lincoln’s Cabinet: Sir: Your letter of the 22 ultimo, tendering your resignation as Captain in*the U. S. Navy has been received.
By direction of the President, your name has been stricken from the rolls of the Navy from this date.
