When the truck was raised enough to free the pinned leg, volunteer fireman Durstin McIntosh climbed into the cab and hoisted Williams to safety. To prevent further injury to the driver’s leg, John Wine carried the man on his shoulder to the waiting stretcher. The truck belonged to J. W. Compton of Castleton.
Williams was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital where he was treated and later released. Williams had no broken bones, only abrasions and contusions.
At one point in the operation some 25 spectators reached high in the air to grab the dump section of the truck to prevent further injury should the crane cable suddenly shift. The sentiments of the 75 to 100 spectators were aptly expressed by a distraught woman onlooker whose one phrase as the trapped mrn was hoisted to safety, was “Thrnk God.”
