Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman today explained how fall-seeded barley will fit into the 1962 feed grain program which Will be carried out under recently enacted Agricultural Act of 1961.
"While many of the details are not yet completed for the feedgrain program which was broadened to include barley for 1962 by the Agricultural Act,” Secretary Freeman said, “ It is important that winter barley producers have as much essential information as soon as possible and before they plant their barley acreage this fall.
“Including barley in the feed grain program gives us an added opportunity to achieve a needed adjustment between feed g ra i n production and feed needs,” Secretary Freeman stated. “The magnificient response of corn and grain sorghum producers to the feed program put into effect within a few short weeks after January 20 for this year’s production is resulting in real progress toward a better balande in supplies. We are determined to make further progress toward this end in 1962 to the benefit of taxpayers, consumers and producers. The new legislation gives barley praducers an opportunity to participate in this undertaking.”
In general, the operation of the 1962 deed grain program for bar ley will be similar to the provisions in effect for the 1961 corn and. sorghum production. Payments will be made to. producers who divert barley acreage to conserving use.
As additional program details are worked out, state and county ASC committees will be advised so this information can be passed along to winter barley producers. Yield and acreage information is being prepared in county ASC offices and each producer will be mailed his barley base acreage, his yield (established 'On the basis of 1959-60 average acreage and production) and payment rate per acre. The signup period for winter ' barley producers will be announced later.
