While the 1962 crop barley support price will not be announced until early next year along with support prices for other feed grains, 1961 county support rates for barley will be used in determining these advance payments. The 1962 national average support level for barley will not be less than the 1961 level.
Acreage Reduction Provisions : Producers who divert 20 percent of their barley base acreage to conserving uses will receive a payment. The payment will be equal to 50 percent of their normal production on the diverted acres times the county support price. The legislation authorizes payments to be made in cash or in kind from Commodity Credit Corporation stocks. Additional Acreage Reductions
Acreage reductions of up to additional 20 percent may be made at a higher payment. Payment for this additional acreage reduction will be determined at the rate of 60 percent of normal production and will be in kind.
As in the case of the 1961 Feed Grain Program, these are special provisions permitting'a producer to divert a minimum of 20 acres.
Barley producers who participate in the program will be required to devote the acreage diverted to approved conserving uses. This will be in addition to their normal acreage of cropland devoted to conserving uses. Price Support Eligibility
Only those barley producers who participate in the program will be eligible for price support next year. Also, they cannot exceed their corn and grain sorghum base acreages to be eligible for barley support. Barley price support to eligible producers will be limited to the normal yield on their 1962 acreage. Malting Barley Exception
Producers of acceptable malting varieties of barley will not be required to reduce barley acreage as a condition of eligibility for price- support on barley or com and grain sorghums. However, fo be eligible for price support, malting barley acreage cannot exceed 110 percent of the average acreage in 1959 and 1960.
