Tlie Virginia Naval Officer Programs Officer, Lieutenant Ellis, disclosed that he has received instructions to increase Virginia’s in-put of college graduates to the Navy’s Officer Candidate School, at Newport, Rhode Island,, by over three hundred and fifty percent for the class convening in early February of 1962.
The reason for the drastic increase in the size of the Navy Officer’s Candidate class, for February, has not been disclosed to the Richmond Officer Programs Officer but it is conjectured that due to the world situation the crews of reserve ships, activated for the Berlin Crisis, will be returned, home when originally planned and ships retained in active status. ^Lieutenant Ellis states that eligibility requirements have not been lowtred and candidates are required to have a college education and be under age of twenty-seven and one half years at time of appointment to grade of Ensign. The upper age limits for those; eligible for Lieutenant (junior grade) skill remain thirty-three and one Jialf years.
