National Bank of Blackstone from its organization in 1908 until 1933. Mr. Gravatt was also a former vice president of the bank. He became attorney for the Bank of Crewe in 1910 and became president of that institution in 1923, an office he held until his death.
Mr. Gravatt, in 1916, became actively engaged in the coal industry and at the time of his death he was president of the Mary Helen Coal Corporation, Coalgood, Ky. He was one of the organizers of the Wilson-Burger Coal Company and the Virginia i Jellico Company and was a former
j president of these firms.
For more than 40 years he ! taught a Sunday school class at j the Blackstone Baptist Church.
He was married to Birdie Eppes who predeceased him.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. E. M. Jones of Washington, Va., Mrs. K. C. Walden of Bedford, Mrs. 'W. T. Sheffield of Knoxville, Tenn. and Mrs. W. H. Crowder of Blackstone; two sons, J. Segar Gravatt of Blackstone, who is the Nottoway county judge, and W. M. Gravatt Jr., a Blackstone attorney, and 18 grandchildren.
A funeral Service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Cemetery. f
