The possibility of the construct-! ion of a large industrial plant in this area was announced this week by H. S. Barksdale of the Rappahannock Lndustrial Development Association. According to Mr. Barksdale, the plant, when erected here, will eventually employ over 250 persons and would “bring an opportunity for better economic security and business improvement for the entire area.”
In making the announcement, Mr. Barksdale said this company now operates five plants in Virginia and is a nationally recognized garment manufacturer. The decision to open the new plant here, he stated, will depend in part on Whether local residents will be willing to invest an amount which will cover a portion of the total plant construction cost. “If community participation can be assured,” according to a company representative, “this nationally known firm will start construction in the near future.”
“Most businesses considering opening new plants,” according to a spokesman of he Northern. Virginia Power Company, “require community financing for at least 50% of the cost of the plant, but the amount that would be required of Rappahannock County is substantially less.” ' The entire project is to be discussed at an open meeting to be held Monday evening, March 19, at 7:30 pun. in Rappahannock County High School, Barksdale said.
