Virginia 4-H members are hardworking youngsters interested in a variety of projects from poultry to plowing. And they like to play as hard as they work says Miss Shirlet' Patton, assistant club agent at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

So, to give those with talent a chance to show what they can do, and to develop an appreciation of talent, clubs take part in the “share-the-fun” program.

Miss Patton says that in addition to developing talent, this program also develops leadership, conf’dence, and provides an opportunity for wholesome recreation

A number of clubs are holding club “share-the-fun” programs at meetings this month. The winner in the club contest will compete in a county contest. Winners it: the senior division have an opportunity to take part in district contests, and in turn in the state contest.

Four-H’ers have a choice of areas in which they can compete. Included are instrument.;!, vocal, dancing, and general talent demonstrations. The general area includes acts with unusual and interesting quality such as novelty acts and dramatic acts.

Winners are selected by the use of a score card grading talent, showmanship, audience reception, and costume. Fifty percent of the score is based on talent, 20 percent on showmanship, 20 percent audience reception, and 10 percent costume.

Each county determines their own eligibility rules and decides the contest divisions. Many counties set up both junior and senior contest divisions*.

In district and state contests club members must have passed their 14th birthday as of January 1 of the current year, and completed three years of 4-H club work, including the current year.

Many members who take part in the 1962 state 4-H “share-the-fun” contest will have the opportunity to appear on programs for state and national events throughout the year, says Miss Patton.
