Garden Club Hears Mrs. Murphy
The Rappahannock Garden Club was entertained by Mrs. William R. Williamson at Oak Forest Garden, Woodville, for its regular July meeting on Wednesday the 17th with many members and guests present. Mrs. H. B. Winfrey was in charge of the program which featvfed Mrs. Glenn F. Murphy
as speaker on the subject of ‘Handicrafts From Nature's Storehouse." The group was entranced as Mrs. Murphy, assisted by Mrs. Carlton Barnes spoke and demonstrated methods of conditioning Seedpods collected from field and garden which she drilled, wired and wrapped into the most artistic designs for home decorating. Mrs. Murphy arid Mrs. Barnes belong to the Westmoreland Congregational Church Bazaar group which has a wide reputation throughout the capitol area for their excellent work with pod design. In addition to the artistic pod arrangements, they create make believe animals and creatures such as frogs, grasshoppers, birds, etc., using pipe cleaners and painted hickory nuts, walnuts, butter nuts, chestnuts, wisteria seeds and others. Many of the wives of diplomats stationed in Washington assist with these creations and in this way learn more of the ways and people of our country and encourage international understanding. After the meeting, the group made a tour of Mrs. Williamson’s garden where she has turned her club training into a profitable business. She designs and furnishes plants for herb gardens and makes herb jellies and vinegars. These are said through the Herb Cottage at the Cathedral in Washington, D. C., and are highly prized by devotees of gourmet cooking. This meeting should have a marked effect on the seasoning of food and on the appreciation of the abundance provided locally by nature's storehouse.
