By W. H. Lyne Curtis Mast, Extension Animal Husbandman, offers the following .to beef cattle people in difficulty. Also, Mr. Mast adds: “Where there is absolutely no grass or feed, there is little alternative but -to sell, but in most problem cases, there is a way to keep breeding herds. '
1. All calves should be creep fed; this will improve the calf and take suckling pressure off the com 2. Cull cow herd hard. 3. Sell heifer calves and move mothers to poorest pasture letting other cows with steer calves have best ; grazing,4. Wean steer calves and full feed grain dry lot till market time, or send steer calves to market. 5. Dry cows can be carried through on extremely short rations. • 6. It will be wiser to feed a small amount of grain on pasture and save hay for winter. With half a feed of hay or silage this winter, four pounds of grain will get them through. Why not use grain now while they are getting roughage from pasture rather than using hay. 7. Remember breeding herds are hard to build, so pull every idea out you can think of to keep foundation herds alive. 8. For hard luck and desperation rations refer to Circular 567. Back in 1930 sassafras bushes and honeysuckle held many a herd together on the farm. Regulations are out on the Culpeper Feeder Calf Sale. Nominations must be made by July 31st.
