quarters we were assigned to an adirondeck and there we put our baggage. Because of the rain, we couldn’t get a fire started but still ate lunch. We were so tired that we went to sleep immediately after supper.
August 10, 1963 - Today we got up to the steady thumping of the rain above our heads. At first we couldn't get a fire started but through the expert fire-building of Wendell Porterfield and Frank Moffett we got a blazing fire going and soon breakfast was cooked. Being so late in the morning we ate lunch right after our breakfast. Both meals were delicious and most satisfying. Right after the meal six of us went on a toutf of the mine nearby. Inside the mine we saw a vein of gold ore which hadn’t been mined. It was a most exciting experience. Awhile after we had come back from the mine we saw a doe grazing about 30 feet from us. It was apparently fairly tame and was not too afraid of us. Finally it went away when we came too near. At 4:00 we went to the miners’ museum to hear a lecture on geology. This was in preparation for the Geology Merit Badge. After the lecture we came back and ate a good supper. An hour after supper we divided into separate adiron(Continued
