The suspension of the test, usually given in April, was announced by the State Director of Selective Service for Virginia. The decision to suspend the test was reached by Director of Selective Service, Lt. General Lewis B. Hershey, because of the small numbers of students who have applied for the test in recent years, the State Director said. The score made on the test was made a part of the student’s official Selective Service local board file. The score was weighed by the local board along with other information in deciding whether to defer a student. The testing program was Initiated in 1951 after a study and report by a committee of educational leaders on the deferment of students. In 3 tests in 1951, about 336, 000 students took the test. Through the 12th test, offered in April, 1954, more than 530, 000 had been tested. With the end of the Korean conflict and reductions in the armed forces, the average age at which men were reached for induction rose. It had been around 23 for the past several years. Most students have been able to complete college before being reached for induction.
The numbers tested under the program declined, and since 1958, only one test per year has been given.
