What to do with com land that had two pounds of 80% atrazine per acre this spring and considerably less than nos mal rainfall since this application? This is the current big question farmers are asking.
Since small grains and legumes are plants affected by residual atrazine, Allen Kates Extension Weed Control Specialist, advises the following: 1. Rainfall in a large part of the state has not been adequate to reduce atrazine rest due to a safe level. 2. Atrazine injury to fall seeded legumes and small grains can be expected. 3. Mold board plowing should be used to dilute this residual atrazine in preparing seed beds for planting small grains and legumes this fall. 4. Heavy discing probably will not be adequate. 5. Seeding of wheat or rye instead of barley or oats should reduce the possibility of residue injury. 6. Pray for rain. In view of our having an inch to 1 1/4 inches of rain in the county on Sept. 5th, I called Allen to ask if this was sufficient amount of rainfall to make fall seedings of small grain and legumes safe. His answer..a prompt NO.
