An applicant may be con-, sidered in need of assistance under the medical ’assistance for the aged program if he or she meets the following two conditions: * l. Income does not exceed $1500 annuity for living expenses, exclusive of medical care, for a single person, and $2100 combined income for a married couple living together Regular cash contributions actually available from legally responsible relatives and from other sources* toward living costs, exclusive of medical care, are considered as income. 2, Cash and liquidable assets do not exceed $500 if single and $800 if married and living with spouse. Ownership of household furnishings and other personal property is generally not to be considered. However, ownership of nonproductive real property not occupied by applicant or recipient ordinarily will preclude eligibility unless the property cannot be sold, the sale would involve undue monetary sacrifice or renewal of productivity is anticipated within the near future, No lien or encumbrance of any kind is to be imposed against the property of a recipient' during his lifetime and no recovery is to be mq,de from his estate. Application for assistance should be made immediately at the time of medical need by the recipient, his relatives, or his legal guardian. Applications will be accepted by the local department of public welfare after January 1. Each application will be studied for eligibility and acted upon by

the Rappahannock County Board of Public Welfare, according to Elizabeth Runtin, Superintendent of the Department of Public Welfare.
