Brown Patterson, a 42 year old negro of Washington was fatally injured December 19, 1963 when he was struck by an automobile on Route 211 just west of Washington. Patterson was driving a 1951 Ford truck belonging to E. M. Richards of Washington when the vehicle developed engine trouble. He stopped the truck on the edge of the highway and as he stepped from it he was struck by a 1959 Chevrolet station wagom operated by Joseph Reuben Lucas of Stanley, according to Trooper W. A. Buntin. Patterson was taken to Dr. John Snead’s office in Sperry, ville by Rappahannock Rescue Squad and waspronounced dead on arrival, by Dr. Snead who is county coroner. No charges were placed against Lucas since it was ascertained that Patterson stepped directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle. A graveside funeral service was held for Patterson Sunday, December 22 at the cemetery in Washington. He is survived by his wife, Ida Clanagan Patterson.
