Mrs. Johnston Wins
1st in Door Decoration
Mrs. T. M. Johnston was the first place winner in the Christmas door decorating contest in the Town of Washington. Her door featured a Della Robbia type Christmas tree made of magnolia leaves, boxwood and articial fruit on a red and white background with a Christmas greeting. It was lighted with yellow bulbs and also had candles on each side. The Judges were from out of town and have remained anonymous but their decision op flrst place was unanimous. Second place went to Mrs. Lester Burke whose door had an old English type lantern decorated with greens and balls. On either side of the door she had placed holly topiary trees decorated with snow and on each side of the
step^ there were cedars with large lighted candles in front. Mrs. L. J. Turner won third for her classic Noel with large electric candles on each side. An honorable mention was added since the judges felt that The Clarence Giles interpretation of the Three Wise Men with a lighted star over the door and candles in the window deserved special mention.
Through the years Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Turner have won acclaim for ^eir artistic decorations so the judges decisions came as no surprise to residents who had toured the town.
