“Our Schools Have Kept Us Free", a film produced by the National Education Association and affiliated state education associations, will be televised during April. The film tells the story of how education has made our freedom possible. Scenes and voices of history combine with today's classrooms to illustrate the close connection between our history and our schools. They developed together as the colonies became a fledgling nation, as that new nation was torn by civil war, as the pioneers set out to populate a continent, as millions of immigrants flooded the shores. At every crossroads of history, the schools are there to provide an enlightened citizenry, as Washington called for, and to unify children from all backgrounds with a common heritage and the skills necessary to meet the challenges of the times.
